Do Babies Fly Free? Infant Fees by UK Airline

From each airline's own help, fees and baggage pages, checked 17 October 2026. Prices and rules change, so check the price shown when you book.

Short answer: usually not. Of the five UK airlines we've checked in depth, only Jet2 lets babies under 2 fly free (since 22 August 2025). easyJet charges £25 per infant, per flight, and Ryanair charges £25 per infant, per one-way flight, so a return costs £50 on either. British Airways charges a lap infant fare that is a percentage of the adult fare, and TUI says its infant charge varies by route and is shown when you book. On long-haul, Virgin Atlantic charges 10% of the adult fare for a lap baby. On every one of them, a pushchair and a car seat go in the hold free.

A worked example: a family of two adults and one baby flying a return trip pays £0 for the baby on Jet2 and £50 on easyJet or Ryanair, on top of the adults' fares. On BA and TUI, look at the infant line in the price breakdown before you pay.

What's free on every airline here

If your baby turns 2 during the trip

This catches people out, and each airline handles it differently:

Buying your baby their own seat

Every airline here lets you buy an under-2 their own seat instead of having them on your lap. Your baby then needs an approved car seat on board, and the fare is no longer the infant fee:

Travelling alone with two under-2s? On easyJet, BA and TUI one baby can be on your lap and the other needs their own seat with a car seat. Ryanair allows only one infant per adult.

Want to fly lighter, or not at all?

On Eurostar there's no infant charge at all: under-4s travel free on an adult's lap. See Eurostar with a baby, or take a cruise from a UK port with P&O Cruises or Cunard and skip the airport entirely.
