Amtrak with a baby or toddler: Free infant travel, stroller rules, car seats & sleeper rooms
Key facts
Short answer: on Amtrak, one infant under 2 rides free on each paying adult's lap (and children 2–12 get 50% off), and you can bring up to two baby items free (such as a stroller, car seat or diaper bag) on top of your two 50 lb carry-on bags. Free Red Cap station assistance boards families early via elevator, and overnight Superliner trains offer full-width Family Bedrooms.
If you are travelling between New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. on the Northeast Corridor, riding the California coast on the Pacific Surfliner, or taking a cross-country overnight trip, Amtrak is the US counterpart to Europe's Eurostar — and its baby and stroller rules are far more generous than any airline's.
On Amtrak, infants under 2 ride completely free on your lap, there are no TSA 3.4 oz (100 ml) liquid limits for formula, breast milk, or pouches, you can stand up and walk the train aisle whenever your baby gets fussy, and each infant gets two free pieces of baby equipment (such as a stroller and a car seat or diaper bag) on top of your own generous carry-on and checked baggage allowance.
Here is everything Amtrak's official policies say about infant tickets, strollers, car seats, breastfeeding, bottle warming, and Coach vs Roomette vs Family Bedroom sleeping cars, checked October 2026.
Quick answers: Amtrak with a baby
| Rule / Question | Official Amtrak policy |
|---|---|
| Do babies under 2 ride free on Amtrak? | Yes: One infant under 2 years old rides free on an adult's lap (per paying adult aged 18+). Additional infants under 2 per adult, or an infant occupying their own separate seat, travel at the 50% child fare (ages 2–12) (Amtrak Child Discounts) |
| Do I need to add my lap infant to the ticket? | Yes: Select "Infant (Under 2)" when booking on Amtrak.com or the Amtrak app so your free lap infant is listed on your reservation |
| Toddlers aged 2–12 fare | 50% off the adult fare (1 child at 50% off per paying adult 18+) |
| Stroller & car seat allowance | Up to 2 infant items free (e.g. a stroller, diaper bag, or car seat) do not count toward your carry-on limit (Amtrak Carry-On Baggage) |
| Adult carry-on & checked bag allowance | Each passenger gets 2 free carry-on bags (up to 50 lbs / 23 kg each, 28 × 22 × 14 in) + 1 personal item — plus 2 free checked bags (up to 50 lbs each) on trains with checked baggage service! |
| Can I use a car seat in an Amtrak seat? | Only if you purchase a seat for your baby (at the 50% child fare) AND the train seat has a seatbelt (most standard Amtrak Coach seats do not have seatbelts, though Café/Accessible tables or select new Venture cars may vary — see details below) |
| Breastfeeding & pumping on board | Explicitly welcomed in all seating areas; nursing mothers may also request a private space from the conductor if an unoccupied sleeper room is available, and station lounges like NYC Moynihan Train Hall have private Nursing Lounges |
1. Infant tickets (under 2) & the 50% child fare trick
Amtrak's infant and child pricing is straightforward:
- Lap infant (Under 2 — FREE): One infant under 24 months old travels free on the lap of each fare-paying adult (18+). Even though the ticket is $0, always add the infant during checkout on Amtrak.com so the conductor has them on the manifest.
- When to pay the 50% child fare for an under-2: On busy Northeast Regional, Acela, or holiday trains where every seat is sold, holding a wriggly 16-month-old on your lap for 4 hours is tiring. Amtrak explicitly allows you to book an under-2 as a Child (ages 2–12) to receive 50% off the adult fare and guarantee two full side-by-side seats (with Amtrak's huge 39-inch seat pitch — 8 to 9 inches more legroom than airline economy!).
2. Amtrak stroller, car seat & diaper bag allowance
Amtrak has the most relaxed baggage policy in North American travel:
- Two free infant items on board: For every infant under 2, you may bring up to two infant items — such as a stroller, car seat, or diaper bag — into the train car free of charge, and they do not count toward your adult carry-on limit.
- Do strollers have to fold on Amtrak? Strollers must be folded and stowed in the large luggage tower at the end of the train car or in the overhead rack during the journey. Because you roll your baby down the station platform and fold right at the train door (or inside the vestibule on bi-level Superliner trains), a one-hand folding travel stroller like the Bugaboo Butterfly 2, Joolz Aer+, or Joie Pact Lite (compare dimensions in our Cabin Size Stroller Checker) fits effortlessly into the luggage rack.
- Pack 'n Plays / travel cribs: If you are bringing a portable playard or full-size double stroller, you can either store it in the lower-level luggage rack on Superliner trains or check it as one of your two free 50 lb checked bags at stations offering Checked Baggage service (arrive at least 45 minutes before departure to check bags).
- What about using a car seat on an Amtrak train? Unlike aircraft, most Amtrak Coach and Acela seats do not have seatbelts, so you cannot strap a car seat into a standard train seat. Bring your car seat for your destination taxi or rental car and stow it in the luggage tower at the end of the coach (or check it free).
3. Warming bottles, changing tables & Red Cap station assistance
- Use Red Cap Service (FREE!) at major stations: At major terminals including New York Penn Station (Moynihan Train Hall), Boston South Station, Philadelphia 30th Street Station, Washington Union Station, Chicago Union Station, and Los Angeles Union Station, uniformed Amtrak Red Caps will load your suitcases, stroller, and car seat onto a luggage cart and take your family down to the platform elevator before general boarding begins. Red Cap service is completely free (a tip of $5–$10 for a family's bags is customary and well worth it!).
- Changing tables on board: Every Amtrak train has accessible restrooms (at least one per coach or on the lower level of bi-level Superliner cars) equipped with a fold-down baby changing table and room to turn around.
- Warming bottles & storing breast milk: In the Café Car, attendants are generally happy to provide a cup of hot water so you can warm a baby bottle in a mug (health regulations prohibit Café attendants from placing passenger bottles or food inside the Café microwave or refrigerator). If you are pumping or carrying expressed breast milk, bring an insulated cooler bag with ice packs — or if you are booked in a Sleeping Car, ask your Sleeping Car attendant for fresh ice.
- Electrical outlets at every seat: Every Amtrak Coach seat, Acela seat, and Sleeping Car room has standard 120V AC power outlets right at your seat, making it easy to plug in a portable USB bottle warmer or breast pump!
4. Overnight Amtrak trains with a baby: Coach vs Roomette vs Family Bedroom
If you are taking a long-distance route (such as the Auto Train from Virginia to Florida, the Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles, the California Zephyr, or the Silver Meteor / Floridian to Orlando and Miami), here is how the rooms compare with a baby:
| Option | Dimensions | Bed sizes & layout | Works with a Pack 'n Play? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coach Seat | Wide reclining seat + leg rest | No flat bed | No | Daytime trips up to 5–6 hours (do not book overnight Coach with a baby if you can avoid it) |
| Roomette | 3'6" × 6'6" (106 × 198 cm) private compartment | 2 seats that convert to a lower twin berth (2'4" × 6'6") + upper bunk | No — floor space is too narrow once the lower bed is down | 1 adult + 1 toddler, or 2 adults with a lap baby on a long daytime leg |
| Bedroom | 6'6" × 7'6" (198 × 228 cm) with private in-room toilet/shower | Wide lower sofa-berth (3'4" × 6'3") + upper bunk | Tight (a mini bassinet like a BabyBjörn/Guava or Peapod tent can squeeze on the floor before the bed opens, or ask attendant) | 2 adults + 1 baby who want a private sink, toilet, and door |
| Family Bedroom (Superliner trains only) | 5'2" × 9'5" (157 × 287 cm) across the entire width of the lower level! | 2 adult berths + 2 shorter children's berths (4'9" long) | Yes (or use the lower child berth with a travel bed rail / Peapod!) | Hands-down the best overnight train room in America for families (includes all meals in the Dining Car!) |
- Bonus — The Amtrak Auto Train (Lorton, VA near Washington DC to Sanford, FL near Orlando): If you are heading from the Northeast or Mid-Atlantic to Walt Disney World or Florida, the Auto Train lets you pack your own car to the brim with your full-size stroller, Pack 'n Play, car seat, and beach gear, drive it onto the train auto carrier in Virginia at 2:30 PM, sleep in a Family Bedroom, and drive off 30 minutes north of Orlando at 9:00 AM the next morning!

FAQs
Do babies ride free on Amtrak?
Yes. One infant under 2 years old rides free on the lap of each paying adult passenger aged 18 or older. If you want a guaranteed separate seat for an infant under 2 (or are travelling with a second infant per adult), you can book them at the 50% child fare.
Does a stroller or car seat count as carry-on luggage on Amtrak?
No. Amtrak allows up to two infant items (such as a stroller, car seat, or diaper bag) per infant free of charge on top of the adult's regular two-bag (50 lb each) carry-on allowance.
Can you strap a car seat into an Amtrak train seat?
Usually no, because standard Amtrak Coach and Acela seats are not equipped with seatbelts. You can store your car seat free of charge in the luggage rack at the end of the car (or check it free on trains with checked baggage) so you have it when you arrive.
