Canada with a baby or toddler: Toronto, Vancouver, Banff, Montreal, border ID & car seat rules
Key facts
Short answer: Canada uses the exact same 120V / 60Hz electricity and Type A/B outlets as the US. Every baby flying into Canada needs a Passport Book, while US citizen children under 16 crossing by land or sea (driving/ferry) only need a birth certificate. On Air Canada and VIA Rail, under-2s ride on your lap (free on VIA Rail; taxes only on transborder Air Canada flights with free family seating), and Toronto's UP Express and Vancouver's SkyTrain offer step-free airport train access.
Canada is the #2 international destination for US families (over 14 million US visits a year) and one of the easiest long-haul holidays for UK families flying into Toronto (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR), Montreal (YUL), or Calgary (YYC) for Banff and the Canadian Rockies. Municipal tap water is spotless across every major city, supermarkets and Shoppers Drug Mart pharmacies carry every baby staple, and Air Canada and VIA Rail have some of the most generous family seating and baby-gear rules in North America.
Before you fly or drive across the border, here are Canada's official rules on passports vs birth certificates for babies, CMVSS car seat laws for visitors, 120V / 60Hz electrical compatibility, and the most stroller-friendly stops in Toronto, Niagara Falls, Vancouver, Victoria, Banff, and Montreal (checked October 2026).
Quick answers: Canada with a baby
| Topic / Rule | Official Canadian policy & practical parent rule |
|---|---|
| 110V vs 240V power & plugs | 120V / 60Hz, Type A & B flat-prong sockets — 100% identical to the United States! All US 120V bottle sterilisers, warmers, pumps & monitors plug straight in. UK/EU 230V-only sterilisers will NOT work (see our 110V vs 240V Dual-Voltage Baby Gear Guide) |
| Baby passport vs birth certificate (US citizens) | By air: Every baby MUST have a US Passport Book. By land or sea (driving/ferry/cruise from the US): US citizen children under 16 may enter Canada and return to the US with an original or certified copy of their US birth certificate! |
| UK & international visitors | Every baby needs a valid passport plus a Canadian eTA (CAD $7) when flying to Canada (US citizens are exempt from eTA) |
| Canadian car seat law (CMVSS) | Under Canadian provincial laws, babies must ride rear-facing (at least until 1 yr & 20–22 lbs, and up to age 2 / seat limits). While Transport Canada enforces CMVSS 213 stickers for residents, visitors driving their own US car or renting short-term should check provincial rules or rent a CMVSS seat at the counter |
| Flying on Air Canada & US carriers | On Air Canada, lap infants under 2 pay only taxes/fees on transborder US–Canada flights, get guaranteed free adjacent family seating, and check 1 stroller + 1 car seat free |
| VIA Rail trains (Toronto–Ottawa–Montreal–Quebec) | Infants under 2 ride free on your lap on VIA Rail, and strollers fold and travel free |
| Tap water & baby supplies | Tap water is safe for drinking and boiling across Canadian cities. Shoppers Drug Mart (Pharmaprix in Quebec), Loblaws, Walmart Canada, and Rexall stock Pampers, Huggies, Royale, Enfamil A+, Similac, and Good Start |
1. 110V vs 240V Power, Plugs & Baby Steriliser Rules in Canada (120V / 60Hz)
- For US Parents: Canada shares the exact same electrical grid as the United States:
120Vat60Hzusing Type A (2-prong) and Type B (3-prong grounded) wall sockets. Your US120Vbottle warmer, electric steam steriliser, Baby Brezza, Spectra/Elvie/Willow breast pump, Hatch Rest, and video baby monitor work with zero adapters and zero converters. - For UK & European Parents: Canada's
120Voutlets are half the voltage of UK/EU230V–240Vmains. - What works: Any dual-voltage (
INPUT: 100–240V ~ 50/60Hz) breast pump, baby monitor, or USB-C device works perfectly with a simple UK/EU-to-Type-B plug adapter. - What does NOT work: Do not pack a
230V-only UK/EU electric steam steriliser or corded bottle warmer — on120Vit receives only a quarter of the power it needs and will never boil water. Instead, pack Milton cold-water sterilising tablets, microwave steam bags, or boil water in a hotel kettle/saucepan (see our 110V vs 240V Dual-Voltage Baby Travel Gear Guide).
2. Border crossing with a baby: Passport vs Birth Certificate & Consent Letters
- Flying into Canada (YYZ, YVR, YUL, YYC): Every infant and child — regardless of age, including newborns — must have their own valid Passport Book to board an international flight into Canada (see our US Baby Passport & Global Entry guide and UK Baby Passport guide).
- Driving or taking a ferry/train across the US–Canada land border: Under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) rules, US and Canadian citizen children under age 16 arriving by land or water (for example, driving across the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls, taking the Amtrak Maple Leaf / Cascades, or driving from Seattle to Vancouver) only need an original or certified copy of their birth certificate (no passport book required!).
- Travelling with one parent: CBSA border officers are trained to watch keenly for missing-child situations. If one parent is travelling to Canada alone with a baby, always carry a signed Child Travel Consent Letter from the non-travelling parent with their phone number and a copy of their passport/driver's licence.
3. Best Canadian destinations with a baby or toddler
Vancouver & Victoria, British Columbia (YVR)
- Why it is Canada's #1 baby city: Mild Pacific Northwest weather, 100% step-free SkyTrain stations (the Canada Line takes 25 minutes straight from Vancouver Airport YVR to downtown Waterfront with full elevator access and room for unfolded strollers!), and flat waterfront paths.
- Best stroller walks & baby sights:
- Stanley Park Seawall: A dead-flat, paved, car-free coastal path wrapping around Stanley Park with mountain and ocean views, plus the indoor Vancouver Aquarium (stroller-accessible, nursing spaces, under-3s free!).
- Granville Island: Take the tiny False Creek Aquabus/ferry (strollers fold or roll on larger boats) to the Public Market and Kids Market.
- Victoria (Vancouver Island): Take BC Ferries from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay (95 minutes; elevators to passenger decks, private nursing room on board, and kids under 5 sail free!) to visit Butchart Gardens and the walkable Inner Harbour.
Toronto & Niagara Falls, Ontario (YYZ)
- Getting from Pearson Airport (YYZ) with a baby: Skip highway traffic on the Gardiner Expressway and take the UP Express train from Terminal 1 straight to Union Station in 25 minutes — level platform boarding for strollers, room for luggage, and children 12 and under ride UP Express completely free!
- Best baby attractions in Toronto: Ripley's Aquarium of Canada (right at the base of the CN Tower — glowing moving walkway tunnel through the shark tank that mesmerises babies; under-3s free), Toronto Islands (10-minute ferry ride to car-free paved paths and Centreville), Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), and High Park (free mini-zoo).
- Niagara Falls (90 mins from Toronto): The paved Niagara Parkway promenade along the Canadian Horseshoe Falls is 100% flat and stroller-friendly, and babies can ride Hornblower Niagara Cruises free in a front baby carrier.
Banff, Lake Louise & Jasper (Canadian Rockies — YYC)
- Altitude check: Unlike Colorado's 9,000+ ft ski towns, Banff townsite sits at a gentle 4,537 ft (1,383 m) and Lake Louise lakeshore sits at 5,680 ft (1,731 m) — safe for healthy babies of any age without altitude sickness concerns!
- Paved stroller trails in Banff National Park: Push your stroller along the flat Bow River Trail and Fenland Trail in Banff town, the flat right-hand lakeshore path at Lake Louise, Johnson Lake, and the Banff Gondola (strollers are stored at the top/bottom station while you carry baby in a carrier across the Sulphur Mountain boardwalk). Use Roam Public Transit buses (children 12 and under ride free; strollers fold on board) to skip Lake Louise parking stress.
Montreal & Quebec City (YUL / VIA Rail)
- European charm with North American 120V convenience: Montreal's Biodôme (indoor tropical/polar ecosystems under one roof — under-3s free), Parc du Mont-Royal, and Parc Jean-Drapeau are wonderful with a stroller. In historic Old Montreal (Vieux-Montréal) and Old Quebec (Vieux-Québec), steep hills and 17th-century cobblestones mean a front baby carrier is much smoother than small stroller wheels (though you can ride the Old Quebec Funicular between Upper and Lower Town with a stroller!).
4. Canadian car seat laws (CMVSS 213), taxis & airlines
- Canadian Car Seat Rules by Province: Across Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec, infants must ride in a rear-facing car seat at least until they are 12 months old AND 20 lbs / 9 kg (22 lbs / 10 kg in Quebec), and safe-sleep/transport authorities recommend rear-facing until age 2 or the seat's upper rear-facing limit.
- Does a US (FMVSS 213) or UK (UN ECE R129) car seat work in Canada?
- On airplanes (Air Canada & WestJet): Transport Canada explicitly permits FAA (FMVSS 213), Canadian (CMVSS 213), and European (UN ECE R44/R129 / TÜV) aircraft-certified car seats to be used in a purchased airplane seat!
- In cars: Canadian law technically requires car seats sold and used by residents in Canada to bear the circular National Safety Mark (CMVSS 213). Visitors driving their own US-plated vehicle into Canada or tourists bringing their own FMVSS 213 car seat for a short visit are rarely questioned in practice, or you can reserve a CMVSS-labelled seat from Hertz, Avis, or National at Canadian airports (see our US & North America Car Rental guide).
- Taxis vs Uber in Canada: In Ontario (Toronto) and British Columbia (Vancouver), licensed taxicabs are exempt from mandatory child car seat rules when hired on demand, but Uber and Lyft rideshare vehicles are NOT exempt — drivers can refuse a ride if you do not have your own car seat (or take the UP Express in Toronto and SkyTrain in Vancouver directly from the airport!).

FAQs
Can a baby enter Canada from the US with just a birth certificate?
If you are driving or taking a ferry/cruise/train across the US–Canada land or sea border, yes — US citizen children under 16 only need an original or certified copy of their US birth certificate. If you are flying to Canada, every baby must have a valid US Passport Book.
Do US 120V bottle sterilisers, warmers, and breast pumps work in Canada?
Yes, 100%! Canada uses the exact same 120V / 60Hz electricity and Type A/B outlets as the United States. UK and European visitors need a Type A/B plug adapter and should only bring 100–240V dual-voltage devices.
How do I get from Toronto Airport (YYZ) or Vancouver Airport (YVR) downtown without a car seat?
In Toronto, take the UP Express train (25 minutes to Union Station, level stroller boarding, children 12 and under free). In Vancouver, take the SkyTrain Canada Line (25 minutes to Waterfront, elevator access, strollers roll right on).
