NCL (Norwegian Cruise Line) With a Baby
From Norwegian Cruise Line's own website, checked October 2026.
Short answer: babies can sail with NCL from 6 months, or 12 months if the cruise has 3 or more days in a row at sea. NCL gives you a foldable playpen with bedding, not a traditional cot, and you can pre-order nappies and wipes to your cabin. There's no babysitting and no drop-off care for under-3s: babies get Guppies Open Play sessions with a parent, and Splash Academy starts at 3. No nappies of any kind, including swim nappies, are allowed in the pools or hot tubs. NCL sails from Southampton, so you can skip the flight. Compare it with other lines in our cruise line baby rules table.
Minimum age
- Babies must be at least 6 months old on the day of boarding (NCL: age requirements).
- If your cruise has 3 or more consecutive days at sea, your baby must be at least 12 months old on the day of boarding. Count the sea days in a row on your itinerary before you book; this matters most on ocean crossings, such as NCL's transatlantic sailings from Southampton.
- Anyone under 21 must share a cabin (or a connecting or adjoining cabin) with someone aged 21 or over.
- If a child under 18 is sailing with an adult who isn't their parent or legal guardian, NCL needs a Parent/Guardian Consent Form signed by both parents at check-in, or boarding may be refused (same page).
Cots, cabins and fridges
- NCL says foldable playpens are available (no traditional cribs) and bedding is provided (NCL: how to prepare for a family cruise, May 2026). Ask for one when you book, then check it's on your booking before you sail.
- NCL's pages don't give the playpen's size or say whether a fitted sheet is included (checked October 2026). Pack a fitted travel-cot sheet and your baby's usual sleeping bag.
- Most cabins have a fridge, handy for milk. In Studio cabins you can ask for one for medical needs (same page).
- Beds can usually be split or joined, and some cabins have sofa beds or pull-down bunks. On some ships, family balcony cabins sit near Splash Academy (same page).
- NCL says most cabins don't come with a bathtub and suggests packing an inflatable baby bath (NCL: cruising with a baby).
Milk, baby food, nappies and highchairs
- You can't bring your own drinks on board, but NCL says exceptions can be approved in advance for infant formula or medical needs (NCL: how to prepare for a family cruise). Ask NCL before you sail if you're bringing formula or milk.
- Pre-packaged, non-perishable snacks are allowed; homemade or perishable food isn't.
- You can pre-order nappies and baby wipes (sensitive, fragrance-free) and have them waiting in your cabin when you arrive (NCL: kids packages). You need to log in to see prices.
- Highchairs and booster seats are in most dining venues, though availability can vary.
- Kids 12 and under eat free from the kids' menu, including at speciality restaurants, where the adult menu costs a flat fee.
- NCL's pages don't say whether the crew will warm bottles or baby food, or whether jars of baby food are sold on board (checked October 2026). Pack what your baby needs and ask at the restaurant.
Childcare: Guppies, Splash Academy and group sitting
- Guppies Open Play is a play space for parents and babies or toddlers from 6 months to 3 years, and children in nappies. A parent stays with their child. Times and places vary by ship and itinerary, so check the daily Guppies programme on board (NCL: youth programmes).
- Splash Academy is a free drop-off club for ages 3 to 12, and Entourage is for 13 to 17s. Register on board on embarkation day; up to four adults can be approved for pick-up, with a password (NCL: how to prepare for a family cruise).
- NCL doesn't offer private babysitting. Late-night group sitting is for ages 3 to 12 only, usually 10pm to midnight, and a fee may apply (same page). So with a baby under 3, you'll be with them the whole cruise.
Pools
- Following US Public Health rules, no nappies of any kind are allowed in the swimming pools, whirlpools or hot tubs, including swim nappies (NCL: pool regulations). NCL says children must be toilet trained to use the pools and hot tubs.
- NCL mentions splash zones and water features for younger children, but doesn't say on these pages whether babies in swim nappies can use them (checked October 2026). Ask on board.
- There are no lifeguards. Children under 12 must be with an adult at all times at the pools, and under-16s need adult supervision in hot tubs. You can bring arm floats.
Pushchairs
Pushchairs are allowed on board. NCL recommends a smaller or single pushchair because corridors can be narrow (NCL: how to prepare for a family cruise). A lightweight folding one also helps on shore days: see our lightest travel pushchair guide.
Sailing from Southampton
NCL sails from London (Southampton) to the British Isles, Norway, Iceland and Western Europe, and in 2026 Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Star sail from there (NCL: 2026 cruises from Southampton). A no-fly cruise means no airport and no baby on a plane, and you can take the train to the port: see pushchairs on trains and ferries. Check the sea days on longer sailings, though; ocean crossings can push the minimum age to 12 months.

Is NCL right for your baby?
NCL suits families who want a relaxed, no-fly cruise from Southampton with a fridge in the cabin and the option to have nappies delivered. There's no nursery, no babysitting for under-3s and no pool time in nappies, so you'll be on duty the whole time. If you want drop-off care for a baby, MSC has Baby Care from 6 months, and P&O Cruises and Cunard run night nurseries and also sail from Southampton.
